Was I Wrong About the Bears? Yes and No.
Before the NFL season began, I had absolutely no faith in the Bears. They were an aging team with a quarterback who’s brain had, from all indications, a fraction of the value of his tremendous arm. To make matters worse, they were out and mortgaged the future on free agents who, while certainly very good players, did not fill the teams most pressing needs of offensive line help and a top line wide received.
I thought the Bears had a guaranteed win at home over the Lions but thought every other game was a crapshoot at best. I thought 1-15 was a real possibility.
Well, now 3-0 and the only undefeated team in the NFC, the Bears are clearly better than I thought.
But let’s be honest here. They beat the Lions at home only because the refs enforced a colossally stupid rule. And they won last night thanks to the Packers deciding as a team that it would be nifty to get called for a penalty on every single play. The win over the Cowboys was legit.
I’d love to jump on the Bears bandwagon but I’ve seen and listened to enough Jay Cutler to know this team still has no chance of being good. That said, I don’t need them to be good to climb back on board. All I really need is for the defense to keep playing as it has been, which I am now convinced is possible, and for Jay Cutler to keep acting like at adult, which I still have severe doubts about.
