Glenn Beck Teaches Black History
Granted, the reason Glenn Beck devoted a show to showing how popular history has ignored a number of blacks is to rail against government (e.g., the reason these guys aren’t taught in school is because liberals want you to think the government is needed to make blacks and whites work together). And yes, the main source of the show is not trained as a historian and is a prominent evangelical and Texas Republican consultant. And yes, as Beck is wont to do, he overstates his case with inaccuracies (e.g., Joseph Hayne Rainey was never the Speaker of the House). Still, regardless of the motives and shortcomings, there’s a lot of black history in this hour on Fox News that I suspect no other major network has ever shown.

Old Town Social
After reading an article about Old Town Social’s burger, a friend suggested we go check it out, which I did over the weekend. The burger, the subject of an upcoming review for A Hamburger Today, was delicious but not spectacular. What was spectacular was my first taste of one of the best charcuterie menus in Chicago.
The charcuterie runs $4 each, but you can get five for $16 if you go with the chef’s selection. I won’t do that again. The summer sausage was entirely unexciting and the pepperoni, while good for the genre, was still less than exciting. The chorizo, lardo and finnocchiona were exceptional.
Even better: on Sundays, charcuterie is just $2 each. I am working on planning my next trip, at which time I will order every piece of charcuterie on the menu. Except for the summer sausage.
There are also some good looking bar snacks on the menu. We tried a couple: pickles (not pictured), olives (not pictured) and deviled eggs.
The eggs are lightly pickled in beet juice and were outstanding. I’m pretty sure the bar snacks are also half price on Sundays, which means deviled eggs can be had for $1 per order of two halves.
There’s also an extensive cheese selection. We went with two blues:
And finally, here’s a shot of the burger:
